How to Retain Studio Members Over Winter

Winter retention strategies. Challenges, programming adjustments, and keeping attendance up when the weather drops.

By Koryn Barrett— Founder & Marketing Director, Kollabo

Winter is when studios lose the most members. Cold mornings, dark evenings, and Netflix on the couch compete directly with your 6am class. Here is how to fight back.

1. Run a winter challenge

"30 classes in 60 days" with a prize for completers. This alone can maintain summer-level attendance through June–August.

2. Adjust your schedule

Move early classes 30 minutes later (6:30am instead of 6am). Add lunchtime sessions for office workers who won't come before dawn.

3. Create warmth

Literally. Make your studio warm. Offer tea/coffee before morning classes. Hot towels after reformer. Small gestures make cold-weather visits more appealing.

4. Accountability partnerships

Pair members who attend similar times. "Your accountability buddy is expecting you at 6:30am Thursday." Peer pressure works when motivation does not.

5. Celebrate attendance

Acknowledge members who maintain their attendance through winter. "Sarah, you have not missed a Monday all winter" — public recognition in the app or on social drives behaviour.
