How to Design Your Fitness Studio Space

Studio design guide. Layout, lighting, flooring, mirrors, sound, and creating an experience.

By Koryn Barrett— Founder & Marketing Director, Kollabo

Your studio design directly affects member experience, class capacity, and operational efficiency. Here is what matters.

Layout

  • Reception: small and functional. POS tablet, water, retail display. 3–5 sqm max.
  • Training floor: 80–120 sqm for 15–20 person classes. 3–4 sqm per person minimum.
  • Changerooms: clean, well-lit, gender-neutral option if space allows. Lockers, mirror, bench.
  • Storage: mats, reformers, weights need a home. Clutter kills the vibe.

Flooring

Rubber for functional training. Timber or vinyl for yoga/Pilates. Never carpet. Budget $30–$80/sqm.

Lighting

Dimmable. Bright for HIIT, warm for yoga, moody for cycling. LED strips on walls add premium feel for $200.

Sound

Good speakers change everything. Budget $500–$2,000 for a proper system. Ceiling-mounted speakers distribute sound evenly. Bluetooth connectivity is non-negotiable.
